BASI Pilates Teacher Training Retreat Venue Portugal

New Venue in Portugal

Starting in 2026 we are moving to a new venue in Portugal and we can't wait to share it with you! Monte das Casolas is an exquisite paradise tucked away in the peaceful hills of the Alentejo region. Think rolling hills, surrounded by cork oak trees and nothing but the sounds of nature around you. For a bit of Portuguese civilization (let's face it, there is always something we forget to bring), the picturesque town of Grandola is not far.

Our Venue in Morocco

Located just 45 minutes outside of Marrakech, is a peaceful and unique yoga retreat centre built in traditional Moroccan style. When we first visited Bab Zouina, it was love at first sight. The studio is cozy and spacious, the views to the Atlas Mountains are stunning. The ample gardens, tended with love and care will give you room to breathe and absorb what you've learned.

Programme & Daily Schedule

So you know what you are signing up to

BASI Pilates’ Mat Pilates Teacher Training program was designed with the aim of building a strong foundation to begin teaching Pilates with knowledge, ease and confidence. The immersive retreat style program is the perfect vehicle for learning the Mat work, which Rael Isacowitz (BASI’s founder) regards as the “crown jewel” of Pilates. With this certification we hope to spread our belief in the Pilates Method and certify teachers that truly embody and understand the essence of Pilates. The mat certification can be used towards BASI’s Comprehensive Pilates Teacher Training worldwide.

About the BASI Method & Training

join an internationally recognized Pilates Teacher Training programme

We offer an immersion programme that integrates BASI Pilates' acknowledged Mat Flex Programme in our signature retreat format. It includes 5 full days of training (6 nights) with post-course work to follow up. Each day will build up on the previous one and students must be present for the full length of the retreat.

The training is laid out in a retreat style format and consists of 5 days (6 nights) of intensive training. Each retreat includes all accommodation with breakfast, lunch & dinners, plenty of practice time, lots of personal coaching and a few surprises…

After completion of the retreat you will then start practicing in ‘real life’ and complete the standard 85 teaching, observation and practice hours required to receive your official BASI Pilates Mat Teaching Certificate. Whenever you feel ready, you may take your practical exam at a designated BASI host location of your choice or online. For more details on completion requirements, see the BASI Pilates website or our FAQs.

In addition to the official BASI requirements, we’ve created our own (totally optional) What’s Next follow-up programme, led by the Life in Movement team. It’s designed to support you beyond the retreat, especially if you don’t have a BASI studio (or even a Pilates space) nearby. We know how real that can be. We can’t wait to welcome you into our little LIM ecosystem and growing community. You’re not doing this alone.

BASI Faculty Teachers

Various teachers

All BASI Pilates education programs, including the Mat teacher training retreats, are taught by a select number of highly qualified and experienced Pilates teachers. The process of becoming BASI Faculty is a lengthy and rigorous one. Each faculty member is individually hand-selected and spends several years preparing to teach the BASI Pilates curriculum. Some BASI faculty teachers have been working with us on regular retreats for years and we are proud to be able to tap into their outstanding knowledge to provide our students with such high quality Pilates education.

FAQs

the only stupid question is the one that didn't get asked

The dates don’t work for me. Do you have others?

We usually list all our teacher training retreats here as soon as dates are confirmed. However, if those dates don’t work for you, let us know as we are constantly planning ahead and chances are that we could use your preferred dates as a starting point for an upcoming training.

I am new to Pilates. Can I still take the training?

We see this training as a starting point to a journey that will probably take years. After all, we never stop learning. So, yes, you could take this training even if you have very little experience with Pilates as a jump start. This will not be easy and will take a lot of determination and stamina. Think of it as becoming a Spanish teacher without speaking any Spanish… A week is hardly enough to become a teacher of any sorts. So please, see this training as an opportunity and a first round to setting the rails of you becoming a Pilates teacher. The more you put in, the more you will get out.

Can I just take a few of the modules?

If you are already holding a BASI certification, you could choose to ‘audit’ some modules/days as a refresher and an audit fee will be charged. If you arrive late or miss any modules, I am sorry that we won’t be able to credit you for single modules that you have taken unless there are special circumstances that have been discussed with us.

I just want to do it for myself and am not planning to do the exams - can I get a discount ?

Our teacher training retreats cover all BASI Pilates Mat course materials, but exclude the exams. Therefore the cost is the same, whether you are planning to complete the training or not.

After the retreat, can I start teaching as a Pilates teacher?

Yes and no. Of course we want you to start teaching to practice, learn, to gain experience and confidence. It is an important part of your journey of becoming a teacher. At the end of the retreat you will have gained a lot of knowledge (and probably a few sore muscles), but you won’t be a certified Pilates teacher. We need to honor a method that takes a lifetime to master. After the retreat you can call yourself a ‘Pilates teacher in training’, but in order to receive your certification you will need to complete all the requirements set by BASI Pilates, including a practical exam.

Can you explain the post-retreat follow up programme?

After the retreat you will then need to complete the required training hours (40 self-practice, 30 teaching, 15 observation). You can do this as part of your regular teaching hours with your own clients,  (which can be family and friends or ‘real clients’). It does not need to be via a BASI studio, there is a lot of flexibility and we will also talk about this during the training. Once you have your hours (which you log in through the BASI Pilates Student Portal) you can register for one of BASI's monthly online exams (live and on zoom) and upon passing you will get your full teaching certificate issued.

In addition, you can join our own "Life in Movement" post-retreat follow up programme, which is optional. There will be bi-weekly homework assignments and I have a global WhatsApp group for all students who have completed the course in the retreat format. Our ‘Whats Next’ Programme offers weekly live training sessions on zoom with your teachers and some mentorship Q&A sessions with me to keep you all connected and to help you along your journey.

I don't have a BASI studio near me. How can I complete my practice hours?

The required training hours (40 self-practice, 30 teaching, 15 observation) don't need to be signed off or completed in a BASI Pilates studio. You can do this as part of your regular teaching hours with your own clients,  (which can be family and friends or ‘real clients’). There is a lot of flexibility and we will also talk about this during the training.

If I want to continue on with the BASI Comprehensive Teacher Training, do I get credit for this Mat Course?

Yes. The 6 Mat Modules taught in our retreat are identical to those taught in the Comprehensive Training. Please contact BASI directly to find out how exactly your retreat can be credited towards any Comprehensive Training.

What do you mean by 'retreat format'?

The focus of our programme is the BASI Pilates Mat Teacher Training Course, meaning you will spend most of your time in the studio practicing and learning. To experience this training as a connected group, taking meals together, sharing rooms and staying in the embrace of a beautiful purpose-filled location away from your daily life is what makes it also a retreat. The focus, the quiet, the intensity. Please understand that this is not a retreat holiday with planned extra activities and excursions. If you want to combine this training with experiencing the country, we recommend you add a few days before or after the course.

Can I just attend the Pilates training without the retreat part?

We offer a purpose-built and unique way to learn to become a Pilates teacher and the fact that everyone stays together in the same location is an integral part of the experience. Therefore, unfortunately, we cannot accept 'day' students, who only come for the course modules as it might disrupt the intimacy and flow of the week together.

Are there any prerequsites to attend the training?

This intensive course is designed to cover Pilates ‘from scratch’. This means that you are not required to have an in-depth understanding of the Pilates Method, although we highly encourage students to establish a regular Pilates practice prior to commencing the training. Our curriculum covers basic anatomy, but we do recommend further studies if you don’t come from a movement/fitness/medical background. Personal trainers, wellness professionals, group fitness instructors and yoga teachers who wish to expand their professional experience, knowledge and qualifications are welcome to take this course. We will help you build a strong foundation in the Pilates Method and enable you to teach private or group mat Pilates classes to a variety of clients.
